Fly
strike happens when adult flies lay their eggs in faeces-soiled fur
around the rabbit's backend. Within 12 - 24 hours the eggs hatch into
maggots which feed on the rabbit by burrowing into its flesh. Fly strike
is often FATAL.
Reasons rabbits get fly strike:
Poor diet can cause soft faeces
Over long teeth - if a rabbits teeth are too long then they do not chew their food properly which can cause soft faeces
Overweight rabbit - they are then unable to turn around and clean themselves properly
Dirty hutch - you must clean out your rabbit everyday in the summer months
Lazy rabbit - some rabbits are just plain lazy and do not clean themselves properly!
It is important you examine your rabbit every day by picking them up and
turning them upside down; check their fur is clean and dry and not
matted. If your rabbit does not keep itself clean then you must ensure
you clean their backend for them. Fly repellents can be used to
try to prevent fly strike but this is not a substitute for good hygiene
