Poppy

Poppy is a 9 y ear 10 month old German shepherd.  She came to Pierson Stewart and Partners as an emergency as she was trying to vomit and had a very painful bloated abdomen.  She had an x-ray of her abdomen straight away and the x-ray showed her to have a large dilated stomach which had twisted (see below).

Poppy was anaesthetised and a stomach tube was passed to try to alleviate some of the gas build up.  Poppy had surgery to empty her stomach, untwist the stomach and stitch it into its correct place.

Poppy spent two nights in hospital with us on a drip, pain relief and antibiotics.  After she was able to eat and drink and not vomit she was allowed to go home.  Poppy is now doing very well at home but is having to be fed small meals 3 times a day to try to prevent this from happening again.

Poppy had a GDV which stands for gastric dilation and volvulus.  It is very common in large breeds and deep chested dogs.  It can happen due to a few reasons, for example feeding a poor diet, feeding a large volume of food and exercising soon after eating.

If your dog shows any signs of retching, trying to vomit, painful abdomen and big bloated abdomen call us straight away.  A GDV is a very serious disease and can be fatal.  It needs to be caught early and surgery is needed to correct it in most cases.

Poppy sadly was not insured.  This meant that the owners were left with a large bill to pay at the end of her treatment.  You can however prevent this by having your pet insured, just in case such an emergency occurs.
