Ultrasound and Echocardiography

Ultrasonography  machines use  high frequency sound waves in the 2.5-7.5MHz. These waves cannot travel through bone or air  but are easily positioned over non boney, non-air filled tissues such as the heart  eye or abdomen . The signal is emitted from the transducer and then returning reflected sound waves are computer analysed to give an image.

We use ultrasound to look at many organs in your animal, for example the liver or heart.  We can also use ultrasound to find out if your pet is pregnant.

Cardiac Ultrasonography  or Echocardiography   is the “Gold Standard” in cardiac diagnosis. It helps in establishing a specific diagnosis and estimating the severity of disease. Heart chamber size, wall thickness and motion can be accurately measured as can heart valve configuration and motion. Blood flow can also be assessed  in the heart and great blood vessels. Doppler pulsed wave, continuous and colour flow can also be used to monitor direction and velocity of blood flow in the heart and great vessels. This machine aids both in the diagnosis of heart disease and can help evaluate the severity of cardiac disease
